In one sense it is easier to re-create a piece of music digitally, because it saves the hard part of having to come up with good music. In all other ways, it is harder. Creating realistic orchestral mockups with virtual instruments is a rather masochistic endeavour. Rarely can one single virtual instrument from a particular vendor capture the nuances of a real performance, and so the only way to approach real recordings is to layer and layer, and then layer some more.

Doing this probably fits no one's definition of 'fun', but I won't lie. I do get a kick out of trying to get as close as possible to the real thing using just my computer and lots of time.
